Silver conductive epoxies are a broad category of adhesive materials that can be applied for electrical as well as electronic uses. They consist of massive amounts of silver flakes or powder dispersed in an epoxy resin that acts as an electrical conductor. Some critical uses of Mg Chemicals silver conductive epoxy.
It is used mainly for joining electrical parts to printed circuit boards (PCBs), for instance, in the electronics industry. It bonds components such as resistors, capacitors, and integrated circuits to the PCB and, at the same time, provides an electrically conducting pathway between the two parts of the component leads and copper features on the board.
This results in good mechanical connections as well as good electrical connections that are required between the different layers. Conductive epoxy also substitutes for the traditional application of soldering elements in areas that cannot withstand high temperatures.
Mg Chemicals silver conductive epoxy is typically used to cover and solder silicon dies in plastic semiconductor packages. The conductive die-attach epoxy is used to attach the backside of the silicon chip to the lead frame or substrate, thereby using an efficient heat-dissipating thermal path for high power densities produced.
The conductive epoxies can be hand applied to fill up the broken traces or put solder joints on the damaged PCB. The structural adhesive properties assist in the repair of the severed board, while the conductive filler is helpful in restoring the conduction path. Other features include EMI and RFI shielding since conductive epoxies screen plastic enclosure walls and covers with conductive traces on the surface. Silver-infused traces capture signals and flow the electromagnetic currents to return to the ground.
Silver nanoparticles are used to produce cost-efficient solar panels and cells through silver-loaded electrodes. They are used to provide ECP connections for the backside metallization, string tabbing, and bus bar connections in silicon solar cells instead of expensive solders and pastes made of silver. The epoxies reduce the solar cell construction due to their ability to be cured at a lower temperature.
Integration of conductive epoxies with other interconnect technologies is paving the way for newer form factors in electronics such as 2D and 3D hybrid PCBs, flex circuits, antennae, sensors, and other intelligent products. Examples of this include aerosol jet printing of conductive traces, stenciling of sensors, laminating antennas, and MID applications with conductive epoxy as the conductive part and, at the same time, the mechanical case.
Some of the conductive formulations include isotopically conductive adhesives (ICA), which have silver particles coated on polymer microspheres that only conduct vertically when placed between two electrical contact pads separated by the adhesive. ICAs carry out electricity only when placed between two surfaces, like a sandwich, and not over an adhesive gap that is horizontal. This makes it possible to accommodate densely packed component arrangements without shorting between nearby pad formations.
Other applications of Mg Chemicals silver conductive epoxy include connecting other applications of adhesion to silver epoxy and potting transformers, magnets, and electric motors. Conductive epoxies also connect and earth heat dissipaters; bond batteries and fuel cells; solder LED lights; mount buzzers, speakers, ultrasound sensors, and transmitters; and repair fire damage and coils in electromagnets, relays, solenoids, and electrical sub-assemblies.
